Passages Luisa Lestz

Caroline, or Change –
“My madness rise up in a fury so wild and I let myself go./Spoke my hate to a child./Pennies done that. Pennies done that./Pocket change…/Pocket change change me, pocket change change me” (116).

“I’m the daughter of a maid./She stands alone where the harsh winds blow:/Salting the earth so nothing can grow/ too close; but still her strong blood flow…/…down to Larry and Emmie and Jackie and Joe” (127).

The Scarlet Letter –
“But, as matters stand with my soul, whatever of good capacity there originally was in me, all of God’s gifts that were the choicest have become the ministers of spiritual torment. Hester, I am most miserable!” (175).

“…and as her tears fell upon her father’s cheek, they were the pledge that she would grow up amid human joy and sorrow, nor for ever do battle with the world, but be a woman in it. Towards her mother, too, Pearl’s errand as a messenger of anguish was all fulfilled” (234).

The Great Gatsby –
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy– they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money…and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” (179).

“It’s a bona-fide piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella’s a regular Belasco. It’s a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop too—didn’t cut the pages.” (46)

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close – “I told them, ‘Yeah, so I invented a device that would detect when a bird is incredibly close to a building, and that would trigger an extremely loud birdcall from another skyscraper, and they’d be drawn to that. They’d bounce from one to another’ ” (250).

“I put my head to the side, I rested it on her shoulder, she put her hand on my cheek, just like my mother used to, everything she did reminded me of someone else…my eyes were closed and I kissed her, her lips were my mother’s lips, and Anna’s lips, and your eyes, I didn’t know how to be with her and be with her” (281).

I really don't want Lydia to hunt me down...

Passages for Finals

Sorry everything is highlighted in white, I don't know how to change it.

Caroline, or Change

"We have to/ teach Noah/ to mind his money; to handle change!" (49).

"My mama liked you!/ I do too!...I'm always sad./ I like it that you're always mad./ And I can tell you like me too./ At least I think you do" (46).

The Scarlet Letter

"'Mother,' said little Pearl, 'the sunshine does not love you.  It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom... There is is, playing, a good way off... It will not flee from me; for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!" (167).

"Her[Hester's] needle-work was seen on the ruff of the Governor; military men wore it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked the baby's little cap...[b]ut it is not recorded that, in a single instance, her[Hester's] skill was called in aid..." (74).

The Great Gatsby

"I wanted to get out and walk eastward toward the Park...but each time I tried to go I became entangled in some wild, strident argument which pulled back..." (35).

"Even when the East excited me most, even when I was most keenly aware of its superiority to the bored, sprawling, swollen towns beyond the Ohio...even then it had always for me a quality of distortion (176).

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

"He [Grandpa Thomas] was on one kind of carpet, I [Oskar] was on another.  The line where they came together reminded me of a place that wasn't in any borough" (237).

"...[I]nstead of singing in the shower I [Oskar] would write out the lyrics of my favorite songs, the ink would turn the water blue or red or green, and the music would run down my legs, at the end of each day I would take the book to bed with me and read through the pages of my life..." (18).

Colbert Report and Gatsby

On Thursday's episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert dedicated the whole episode to Gatsby. Carey Mulligan came on the show and there were some guest appearances from other people as well.

Colbert dissects the book and goes on a journey to learn about it. Here's a clip from his adventures with Mulligan (Daisy).

Gatsby's Final Desires: Put to Rest or Carried to the Grave?

Hey everyone, one thing that really stuck with me even after finishing the novel and moving onto Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was the idea of whether Gatsby had finally let go of the dream of having Daisy, or carried it to his grave.  I personally can't decide and its been really hard trying to dissect the final few pages and get any concrete evidence since the book is written from Nick's narrative.  Feel free to post your opinion and any solid evidence that your able to find would be great because its kinda starting to bug me...
