Passages for Finals

Sorry everything is highlighted in white, I don't know how to change it.

Caroline, or Change

"We have to/ teach Noah/ to mind his money; to handle change!" (49).

"My mama liked you!/ I do too!...I'm always sad./ I like it that you're always mad./ And I can tell you like me too./ At least I think you do" (46).

The Scarlet Letter

"'Mother,' said little Pearl, 'the sunshine does not love you.  It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom... There is is, playing, a good way off... It will not flee from me; for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!" (167).

"Her[Hester's] needle-work was seen on the ruff of the Governor; military men wore it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked the baby's little cap...[b]ut it is not recorded that, in a single instance, her[Hester's] skill was called in aid..." (74).

The Great Gatsby

"I wanted to get out and walk eastward toward the Park...but each time I tried to go I became entangled in some wild, strident argument which pulled back..." (35).

"Even when the East excited me most, even when I was most keenly aware of its superiority to the bored, sprawling, swollen towns beyond the Ohio...even then it had always for me a quality of distortion (176).

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

"He [Grandpa Thomas] was on one kind of carpet, I [Oskar] was on another.  The line where they came together reminded me of a place that wasn't in any borough" (237).

"...[I]nstead of singing in the shower I [Oskar] would write out the lyrics of my favorite songs, the ink would turn the water blue or red or green, and the music would run down my legs, at the end of each day I would take the book to bed with me and read through the pages of my life..." (18).
