Salinger's message about writing

One thing I noticed after we finished the book (and i got some help) I finally saw a connection between Sergeant X in For Esme- With Love and Squalor and The Chief in The Laughing Man.  They both possess problems within their respective lives.  Although their problems have almost no connection, they both find ways to escape the worries of life and positively and creatively through writing and narrating.  I believe Salinger included this in Nine Stories because he is trying to convey this idea of how soothing, serene, calming, and helpful literature can be as a positive outlet.  He is showing through these characters the positive effects writing has possessed on his life and how powerful and effective literature can truly be.  Comments on this connection between literature and its use as an escape?
