Moonrise Kingdom- Cuckoo

For anyone who hates the most miniscule of SPOILERS please read this after finishing the book.

Has anyone seen "Moonrise Kingdom"?  It's one of my favorite movies of 2012.  There's a song from the movie called "Cuckoo!".  So, there I was reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, when I remembered the song.  After listening to it on Youtube, I thought just how perfectly appropriate the song is for the novel.

Here are the lyrics (from Metrolyrics.com):

Cuckoo, cuckoo...
What do you do?
In April, I open my bill.
In May, I sing night and day.
In June, I change my tune.
In July, far, far i fly...
In August, away!
 I must... cuckoo, cuckoo...

The song summarizes the novel very well.
McMurphy comes
He sings
He changes the ward
The Chief escapes

  1. I haven't seen "Moonrise Kingdom," but I agree you can make many connections between the song and the book. The passage of time is an important part of both. In the song, it goes through the months according to the cuckoo. In the book, you can see the changing state of the ward over time, particularly in how McMurphy is responsible for these changes as the months go by.

  2. SPOILING SPOILING SPOILING SPOILING!!!
Moonrise Kingdom is so cute! I love the colors. Everything is so bright and colorful!
I thought it was funny that you compared Moonrise to Cuckoo because they are so opposite in colors and ... everything.
I agree that the song summarizes the book quite well.
"In August, away!" could also be interpreted as McMurphy losing his body and his mind after the lobotomy.
    Pretty Song!

  3. Moonrise Kingdom is definitely on my list of favorite movies from 2012. I'm a Wes Anderson nut. You've all made some great connections between the lyrics of the song and the end of the novel.
What other songs would work for the soundtrack of the novel? Songs that would fit specific moments in the novel? Songs for specific characters?
