Billy Bibbit=Judas???
When Billy Bibbit blamed McMurphy and his "apostles" for his actions for the night, it seemed to me that Kesey had expanded his religious allusion to include a Judas. By blaming McMurphy, Billy betrayed his "Jesus" to "Rome". Judas also committed suicide after betraying Jesus, like Billy did. If Billy is supposed to be some version of Judas, I found it interesting that Kesey depicted him as such a sympathetic character when that is not typically the way that Judas is thought of.

that was exactly what i was thinking while I was reading through the story. Like i remember the biblical story, but for some reason I couldn't remember the guys name (which you have obviously established as judas). What I was wondering though was if anyone thought of any characters or events that mirrored Peter and his denial of Jesus on his way to be crucified while everyone on the ward starting getting suspicious of MacMurphy's kindheartedness.
ReplyDeleteBackground to story
while on his way to crucifixion, Peter on of Jesus's 12 apostles, had followed Jesus and the guards leading him. The guards had noticed him following them and asked on three separate occasions why he was following and if he had believed in Jesus's works. Peter denied believing in Jesus all three times.
