This is Lana Del Rey's song Young and Beautiful from the soundtrack of the Gatsby movie that's coming out soon. First of all, I love Lana Del Rey and I LOVE this song, but other than that, I think that it really reflects the mood and the general themes of the novel so far. There are several lines in the song that talk about parties and "crazy days". I think that these lines reflect the atmosphere of Gatsby's party: there is a cheerful, crazy mood with a sort of sinister undertone. There is also a lot of repetition of the line "will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful". I think this reflects most of the marriages and relationships that we have seen so far in the novel. Every marriage we have seen so far is a mess and the people in the relationships don't love each other anymore. Anyway, let me know what you think (and I included the lyrics below if you want to read them).
I've seen the world
Done it all, had my cake now
Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel-Air now
Hot summer nights mid July
When you and I were forever wild
The crazy days, the city lights
The way you'd play with me like a child
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul
I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful
I've seen the world, lit it up as my stage now
Channeling angels in, the new age now
Hot summer days, rock and roll
The way you'd play for me at your show
And all the ways I got to know
Your pretty face and electric soul
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul
I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful
Dear lord when I get to heaven
Please let me bring my man
When he comes tell me that you'll let me
Father tell me if you can
Oh that grace, oh that body
Oh that face makes me wanna party
He's my sun, he makes shine like diamonds
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul
I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful
Will you still love me when I'm not young and beautiful
There is so much about this song that really fits with the plot. I find that the chorus is particularly intersting.
ReplyDelete"Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful

I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful"
There is this question of whether love will last even through old age, and the singer assures herself that the man will continue to love. However, the last line is the question repeated. It is as if there is still some doubt. The chorus reminds me of Daisy and Tom. Daisy assures herself that everything is fine, but, in her heart, she knows that Tom is cheating on her.
P.S. Lydia, you have gotten me addicted to this song!
